Edward B. Havas

Well respected among his peers and recognized as a top trial lawyer, Edward Havas (Ed), President and a founding member of Dewsnup King Olsen Worel Havas Mortensen, focuses his practice on representing survivors and families of victims in negligence, product liability, air crash, mining disaster (such as the deadly Crandall Canyon coal mine collapse of 2007), medical malpractice and other catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases.

His professional experience is rounded out by numerous relevant activities, which include being Vice President of The Brain Injury Alliance of Utah, chairing medical malpractice pre-litigation panels, and acting as an arbitrator in medical malpractice and injury cases. He is listed on the U.S. District Court's approved panel of mediators, where he volunteers his time to mediate federal cases.

His legal experience is extensive at many levels. For nearly 30 years, Mr. Havas has served as volunteer judge pro tem in Salt Lake and Davis Counties, sitting monthly to hear small claims court cases. He currently serves on the Utah Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on the Rules of Evidence. He has published articles, spoken at seminars and other presentations on legal matters, and has been actively involved in legislative affairs to preserve the civil justice system and access to the courts.

Havas has garnered many top honors during his career. In 2015, he was tapped as a member of the Nation's Top One Percent by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel (NADC), in which members are thoroughly vetted by a research team, selected by a blue ribbon panel of attorneys from independently neutral organizations, and approved by a judicial review board as exhibiting virtue in the practice of law. This elite class of advocates comprises the most respected leaders of the legal profession from across the nation.

He has been named to the Mountain States Super Lawyers list, an honor awarded to only five percent of attorneys in Utah each year, and is among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Utah as listed by The National Trial Lawyers Association. He has been named one of Utah's Legal Elite and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for several years. In 2012 and 2018, he was honored as Salt Lake City's Best Lawyers Personal Injury Litigation Lawyer of the Year. He also has been named a Top 100 Lawyer in litigation by the American Society of Legal Advocates.

Born in Ogden, Utah, Mr. Havas graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in political science from Weber State University in 1979. He earned his juris doctor degree in 1981 from the University of Utah College of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif legal honor society. He was admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of Utah and the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1981, and to the United States Supreme Court in 2013.

An instrument-rated pilot, he has put his aeronautical knowledge to use in several aviation cases. He is a past chair of the Utah Arts Festival’s board of directors and enjoys the arts in their many forms. He also enjoys motorcycling, scuba diving, and traveling.
